The WordPress Problem

WordPress powers 43-47% of all websites on the internet. It’s an incredible software system and framework. But the problem, as I’ve stated so many times, is that the leadership – Matt Mullenweg – lost his way about what the product is, what it does, and what it should be doing. It’s been hijacked by that lack of leadership.

It’s Lord of the Flies – when you leave things to that situation, bad actors appear. I name them all the time: Asim Motive and Syed Balkhi. They’re doing everybody a disservice because we’re in a world of human beings needing to help humans. When you trick people or lock them in or spray paint affiliate links all over their dashboard, that’s just wrong.

On the other hand, SaaS companies are providing incredible amounts of stuff almost for free, causing an arms race. But let’s not forget what has happened and what will happen. I’m holding paperwork showing I’m a member of a class action group that allows me to collect damages from Google.

You as a human being can only trust human beings. You cannot trust corporations. You cannot trust oligarchical corporations, even ones that come bearing gifts like a Trojan horse. When they say “put all your stuff in Notebook LM” or “put all your stuff in Lovable” – you’re going to end up locked in, just like what happened with Ning back in 2006-2008 when Mark Andreessen and his attorneys decided to shut it all down.
